What started out as a modest game soon grew into the largest game I've hosted yet at Slater's 50/50! Many burgers were munched and beers were downed as several of the new teams to the venue warmed themselves up for the upcoming Tournament of Champions this weekend.
The first round proved that experience will get you nowhere in general trivia as everyone stayed very even, but the singular Thirsty Pretzel stretched to an early lead as they identified all but one of our celebrated pigs (curse you, Leonard Mudbeard...you and your Angry Birds Movie!) after a botched Double or Nothing by Highway Stars.
But our eventual winners made up for that by using another Double or Nothing in the third round to catapult them into the lead from last place! Kathryn Hepburn proved especially polarizing, as she was easily identified by two teams (Highway Stars and Knock on Wood) but everyone else came up short, which means they all have a lot of new classic movies added to their bucket lists courtesy of moi.
But after what amounted to the CW Night in Round 5 left people scratching their heads in the cornfields of Kansas, nearly everyone aced the religious texts (Book of Shadows, anyone?), with a perfect score by Highway Stars and a near-perfect score by Knock on Wood and Uffda, we arrived at the dreaded Round 7 which did not disappoint...
NETFLIX
Turns out most of our teams did not know about two things tonight: music (poor Kendrick Lamar and Janelle Mon?e) and Netflix. Several teams included Fuller House as a drama and almost everyone had Ozark on their list despite not premiering until a year after Stranger Things...but at least that was closer to the mark.
But after the streaming dust had settled, Highway Stars maintained their lead and won the night, continuing their momentum into the Tournament of Champions this weekend! Good luck, team!
A tiebreaker resulted in the Patriots winning again...can't catch a break, can we, SoCal? Bringing the third place prize to our Thirsty Pretzel.
Thanks for a great week, everyone! See you next time!

In the red corner...two returning teams determined to win it all...it's Atari Kobayashi and the Grand Poobahs!!!
In the blue corner...two newcomers who quickly invested themselves in the unexpected night of trivia they found themselves in...Team J and the Three Amigos!!!
The first few rounds were neck and neck with a couple essential freebies thrown in about football since we were surrounded by TVs with sports on them. But it quickly got serious after the Grand Poobahs edged out the competition by figuring out Peter Pan in the 6-point round. Sadly, Team J, you will always remember this as the day you almost got six points...by guessing Jack Sparrow.
Nearly everyone knew their prepositional literature phrases (except for From A Buick 8...thank you, Stephen King!), but it was the Carolinas from Round 5 and the LEGO video game franchises from Round 7 that made everyone hit a brick wall (ha).
This caused Atari Kobayashi and the Grand Poobahs to enter into a tiebreaker, thanks to Atari's registration bonus. With Price is Right rules in effect, the Grand Poobahs were closer with a guess of 8,100 seconds in The Godfather so they won for a second week in a row! Congratulations, gentlemen! But you just made a very dangerous enemy in Atari Kobayashi...
Special shoutouts to the third of the Three Amigos, who admittedly didn't have much to contribute in the way of answers but still had a good time! And also to Team J for initially turning down the opportunity to play but decided to jump in after they figured out they knew all the answers to Round 1 (and they pretty much did!).
Thanks, all, and I'll see you next week!

Hello and welcome to Slater's 50/50, where even the staff get in on the fun of trivia nights on Tuesdays!
A great turnout for my first night here, with four very solid teams that kept things interesting right up until the very end. With answers such as "Bert & Ernie" instead of The Coen Brothers and "Fast Pitching Guy" when asked about Mets All-Star pitcher Noah Syndergaard, Google became the hilarious wild card throughout the night when their only goal became to not be in last place.
The other neck and neck competition occurred between All Work - No Pay and Atari Kobayashi, who kept each other only points apart through guessing on Jennifer Aniston and the several African capitals...because she'll be there for you when the rain starts to fall down in Africa...
Though they both scored the same in the final round, it was All Work-No Pay's knowledge (or guessing ability) about those capitals that secured their ultimate victory! In our other race, Google edged out Your Mom's Team by coming in third when the latter took a gamble on the final round and was undone by not enough people ordering tomatoes on their pizzas...guess the sauce is already enough for most people.
Congrats to everyone involved and special shoutout to Your Mom's Team for staying until the very end! You said you'd probably bounce after a couple of rounds, but trivia becomes infectious after a while, right? And there is no known cure.
See you all next week!
