Numbers were up again this week, with a full house at Collision Brewing; I brought a large bottle of hand sanitizer to ensure a safe AND fun night. No fewer than 3 teams scored 6 out of 6 in Round 1: #momjeans, Motha Smucker & Tequila Is Not A Patronus. Motha Smucker followed that with 7 in the Picture Round to lead by 1 point after 2 rounds over those two teams as well as Trebek's Rejects (who also scored 7). #momjeans and Motha Smucker each tallied 6 of a possible 6 in Round 3 while the Rejects, Motha Smucker and Mim & Maple each scored 5; after 3 rounds, Motha Smucker led#momjeans by a point and Trebek's Rejects and Tequila Is Not A Patronus by 2. Trebek's Rejects and Tequila Is Not A Patronus were high scorers in the Guess Who round, each correctly answering for 8 points.; Limoncello were unable to answer and the resulting zero dropped them out of the running for the night. Grace Rules (in the form of the Quizmaster's wife), agonized over finding the name in question after being subjected to countless hours of The Simpsons; just as she was handing in a guess, she snatched her form back, yelling "FLANDERS!, and garnered 2 points.
With 4 teams bunched within 4 points entering Round 5, Trebek's Rejects and #momjeans made their move by successfully converting the evening's first double-or-nothing bid; Squid Inferno and Motha Smucker responded by successfully doubling in Round 6 to ensure an exciting finish. After 6 rounds, #momjeans (10 out of 10 in Round 6) had 56 points, Trebek's Rejects had 55, and Motha Smucker had 51; Squid Inferno's double vaulted them into 4th place with 45. In Round 7 Trebek's Rejects scored 5 of a possible 10, only to see #momjeans match that score to win by a single point; Squid Inferno tallied 9 points but Motha Smucker's 7 was enough to secure 3rd place.
(Scorer's note: Squid Inferno was awarded a retroactive point for their answer "Zesta" in Round 5 in response to the question about a Keebler product "similar to saltines". While "Club Cracker" was the answer sought (and the one which fit the golf theme), Zesta is the Keebler cracker which (on Keebler's website) is identified with the word "saltine". Though it was not the answer we were looking for, it is technically NOT wrong and I therefore gave them the point.)
It was nice to have everyone back again, I hope to see you all again next week!!
We had another great night at Collision, including a thrilling finish! Fantasia 2000 converted a successful double-or-nothing right out of the gate to jump out to 6-point lead after one round; in fact they led most of the night. Fleetwood Mac Sex Pants and #momjeans were high scorers in the Picture Round, each scoring 8 of a possible 8 to close the gap a bit. The Scientific Method question tripped up several teams in Round 3; #momjeans, Mim & Maple and Tequila Is Not A Patronus all went for doubles and all took a zero, (seemingly) knocking them out of contention. #momjeans were high scorers in the Guess Who Round, correctly answering (Rachel Weisz) for 8 points; Sex Pants took a -1, dropping them into the middle of the pack while Motha Smucker declined to answer. 4-Way Stop hit their high score of the night in Round 5, tallying 5 (along with FM Sex Pants); Fantasia 2000 got 10 out of 10 but were caught from behind by Tequila Is Not A Patronus, whose successful double pulled them level with the leaders. Those 2 teams each scored 6 in the Handout Round to remain tied entering the final round (Motha Smucker were high scorers with 7). Fantasia 2000 scored 8 in Round 7 but were pipped at the post by Tequila Is Not A Patronus, whose 9 points won the night (and the beer!). Equally important, Limoncello's 6 lifted them out of the cellar in the final standings for the first time in weeks; they are dear people who show up EVERY WEEK, rain or shine, and the whole room applauded them at the end.
Thanks for another fun evening, all, see you next week!!
After last week's climactic (pun intended!) turnout, numbers were down this week due to Lent (yeah, right!) and an excellent game to boot. We had 7 registered teams at Collision this week. Mim & Maple (& friend) were high scorers out of the gate, scoring 6 of a possible 6 in the 1st round; Fantasia 2000 and Tequila Is Not A Patronus each scored 6 of 8 in the Picture Round to move into a 3-way tie for 1st with M&M. Fantasia 2000's 5 (of 6) was the high score in Round 3 as they moved into a 2 point lead but were promptly caught by Mim & Maple in the Guess Who round (M & M were the only team to answer correctly for 8 points); Limoncello & Tequila Is Not A Patronus each took a -1, damaging their chances. (Side note: Patronus guessed George W. Bush for 10 points; when the 8 point clue said the person had earned a "Masters in Philosophy", they cringed noticeably) In Round 5, Fantasia 2000 made their move, tallying 10 of a possible 10 to move 3 points clear of the field; #momjeans (a party of 2 this week after last week's blowout), Trebek's Rejects and Mutha Smucker all scored 9. Limoncello finished strong with 8,8, and 5 down the stretch but could not overcome the negative point in Round 4. #momjeans correctly answered all 10 questions for 10 points in the Handout Round...but were eclipsed by no fewer than 4 teams who successfully converted double-or-nothing bids: Fantasia 2000, Trebek's Rejects, Mutha Smucker and Tequila Is Not A Patronus. (Mim & Maple went for the double but only got 9 right, effectively eliminating them on the night) Fantasia 2000 entered the final round ahead by 8 and cruised home to the win with 8 points; Trebek's Rejects coasted home in 2nd place while Tequila Is Not A Patronus came all the way back (after their -1 in Round 4) to nose out Mutha Smucker for 3rd place by 2 points.
It was, as always, a fun night and I look forward to doing it again next week. The good weather is coming, soon we will be spilling onto the patio!
