The level of competition was almost as high as the temperatures around Longmont tonight, as the game was closely contested throughout. Brown Chicken, Brown Cow converted a successful double-or-nothing in Round 1 and led wire-to-wire, but they never led by more than the 6 point margin that double gave them. Newcomers Fleetwood Mac Sex Pants and defending champs Trebek's Rejects each scored 8 of a possible 8 in Round 2 to narrow the gap and 4 of the 5 teams scored 5 in Round 3 (Butterbeer Beaches scored 4), resulting in little movement in the standings. (Fortunately for them, Fleetwood Mac Sex Pants correctly answered question 3 with "Fleetwood Mac".) 4 teams also correctly answered the 6-point clue in the Guess What round; a tip of the cap is due Rejected Llamas at this point. First-timers who struggled mightily last week, they returned with a new name (and a KT team number!) and scored 16 of a possible 20 in the first 3 rounds. Sadly, they took a -1 in Round 4 and never recovered.
The "Find The Connection" round was extremely challenging for the players tonight, with Brown Chicken, Brown Cow and Fleetwood Mac Sex Pants pacing the field with 7 of a possible 10 points. ( A side note: tonight produced an exceptionally high number of hilarious[ly wrong] answers, many of which are unfit to print here, but Round 5 produced the topper of the night. One team had deduced the theme [types of squash but had no idea who starred in "Let's Stay Together" so they took a stab with "Butternut McGee". I wish I could share with you some of the attempts at naming Muppet movies.)
Round 6 produced an unlikely statistical anomaly: scores of 9-8-7-6-5 for the teams in places 1-2-3-4-5! Brown Chicken, Brown Cow entered the final round leading Fleetwood Mac Sex Pants by 5 points and Trebek's Rejects by 9, meaning they were not quite in the clear; as it happened they could correctly name "only" 4 movies starring The Muppets but the 2 teams trailing them each scored 6, leaving Brown Chicken, Brown Cow as this week's winners with 50 points. Fleetwood Mac Sex Pants finished 3 points back in 2nd place, with Trebek's Rejects a further 4 points behind in 3rd.
Let's do it again next week, hopefully under cooler conditions!
It was great to be back at Collision Brewing after a week off for the 4th of July holiday, and great to have another full house! A shout out to the quizmasters who put together this week's set, it was very challenging as well as entertaining.
The teams were tightly bunched after Round 1 until a successful double-or-nothing by regulars Trebek's Rejects and #momjeans along with returners MGBK (last seen at the Longmont Public House!) put some distance between those 3 and the rest of the field. All teams fared reasonably well in Round 3, but the Guess Who round stumped the house; Butterbeer Beaches correctly answered for 8 points while 2 teams took a -1 and 5 declined to answer!
Trebek's Rejects hit another double in Round 5 (Find The Connection), opening up a 15-point lead and effectively clinching the win. MGBK were steady throughout, finishing the final 3 rounds with scores of 8 - 8 - 7 to hold off Brown Chicken,Brown Cow for 2nd place. Brown Chicken finished the last 3 rounds with 9 points in each to claim 3rd place, nosing out Butterbeer Beaches by a single point. Gold VS. Gold were also consistent but could not overcome the 0 in the Guess Who round, finishing 5th, while #momjeans (back after a week's absence) paid the price for attempting to leap back into the race by doubling twice and missing on each to finish 6th. A tip of the hat to first-timers Lindas (for scoring 9 of a possible 10 in the final round) and Alpacaccino for their 7-point score in Round 6; both teams were good sports and are welcome back any time!
I think all the players were happy to beat the heat after today's 99 degree heat; let's do it again next week, hopefully under cooler conditions!
It was another full house tonight at Collision Brewing, with fully 8 teams and 33 players on a blindingly sunny night at Collision (check the pictures). In fact one team left just before we started or we would have been at overflow....and all that without #momjeans!
Gold VS. Gold, Butterbeer Beaches and Trebek's Rejects all jumped out quickly by successfully converting double-or-nothing tries, but those 3 teams spent the rest of the night vying for 2nd place as F Words for $500 hit a double in Round 2 and never trailed after that, playing a steady and consistent game to finish in the winner's circle after being nosed out in the tiebreaker round last week (to claim $30 in Collision gift cards and a 6-pak of Panzer lager). (F Words have threatened to quit while they're ahead but I have a feeling they'll be back) F Words, Gold and Butterbeer were the only teams to turn in an answer in the Guess Where round (each scoring 6) and Trebek's Rejects seemed to drop out of the race until they scored 18 of a possible 20 in rounds 5 & 6 to make the race for 2nd a 3-team affair. Butterbeer Beaches moved into 2nd after Round 6 but Gold Vs. Gold outscored Butterbeer and Trebek's Rejects 7-4 in Round 7 to take 2nd place (6 points behind the winners) for $20; Butterbeer Beaches held on for 3rd and $10.
Each of the newbie teams had its moments, including Wayfarers scoring 8 of a possible 10 in Round 6 while The Valley Girls scored 6 points 3 different times. Biohazard, God love them, hung in to the end, had a 5 in Round 2 and a great time all night. It must be said that tonight's question set was the most difficult in memory, stumping the players several times; kudos to the KT team! Also, I had the pleasure of showing the ropes to a new King Trivia Quizmaster tonight; Devin will soon be running the show at the newest KT location in Commerce City. Judging by my interactions with him, the patrons there are in for a good time.
There will be no show next week as the 4th of July falls on a Thursday, but I will see you all back at Collision in 2 weeks, on 7/11. Happy 4th, everyone!
