What a night at Collision tonight! We had the best turnout EVER (in my 2+ years as Quizmaster); we had to bring in folding tables and even then we had a team seated at the bar and another turned away...the next step would have been a visit from the Fire Marshall! Twelve teams and 58 players!! Trebek's Rejects had so many players that they split into 2 teams, and Rejects 2.0 were high scorers in Round 1 with 6 of a possible 6; #momjeans, 4-Way Stop and the original Rejects all tallied 5 to tie for 2nd thru 1 round. Butterbeer Beaches were the only team to correctly name all 8 images in the Picture Round, moving them into 1st place by 2 points in front of both of the Trebek's Rejects teams; 4-Way Stop were a point back in 4th with Trivia Trumps Debates a further point behind in 5th. No fewer than 4 teams scored 6 of a possible 6 in Round 3, with Cammie Hates The Cello and Jeffrey Dahmer's House Of Ribs joining Butterbeer Beaches and Rejects 2.0 as high scorers; Beaches were the leaders at this stage but 6 teams were within 6 points of the lead. Round 4 (Guess Who) was where some separation arose. Trivia Trumps Debates and 1st-timers No Brainers each took a -1, Limoncello and Cammie Hates The Cello each declined to turn in while Slingers and 4-Way Stop scored 2 apiece; all of those teams were relegated to the second division of the standings for the rest of the night. Afterthought and Trebek's Rejects (original) each answered correctly for 6 points while Butterbeer Beaches, #momjeans and Rejects 2.0 all scored 8. (Afterthought found their stride, finishing with 6-6-6-5 over the final 4 rounds) At this point Beaches led #momjeans by 3 and Rejects 2.0 by 5. In the Find The Connection Round (#5) Butterbeer Beaches, Trivia Trumps Debates and Trebek's Rejects each scored 9 of a possible 10, with the original Rejects and 4-Way Stop tallying 8; Slingers and Limoncello each scored 7. #momjeans went for a double and failed, dropping them from contention for the duration. First-timers No Brainers had to leave after Round 5 but went out with a bang, scoring 10 of a possible ten to top all teams. Butterbeer Beaches were still in the lead, by 2 over Rejects 2.0 and by 6 over the original Rejects. In the Handout Round Butterbeer Beaches scored 9 of a possible 10 (as did #momjeans, who said they had learned their lesson the previous round and happily did not double) but were leapfrogged (after leading all night) by Trebek's Rejects 2.0, who notched the first successful double-or-nothing of the night to jump a full 9 points in front of the pack; Beaches still led 3rd place Trebek's Rejects by 9 points. The final round had another surprise in store; Trebek's Rejects scored 9 of a possible 10 to coast home with the win with 65 points, while Butterbeer Beaches tallied a 7 to finish in 2nd place, 11 points back. But Jeffrey Dahmer's House Of Ribs, in the middle of the pack all evening, hit a successful double to vault past the original Rejects, nosing them out for 3rd place by 4 points.
A huge thank you to all who turned out tonight, and to the staff at Collision for scrambling to both accommodate a crowd that size AND serve everyone so flawlessly. The back room at Collision is booked for a private event next week but we will be back on January 16th to do it all again. See you then!
Wow, we had a GREAT turnout tonight at Collision on the Night After Christmas...and a great game too! The teams were tightly bunched after one round but #momjeans jumped out in front to stay with a successful double-or-nothing in Round 2 for 16 points, moving them 9 points clear of the pack (all other teams scored between 5 & 7). The Holiday Movie Haiku round 3 was excellent, and 8 of the 9 teams scored between 3 & 5 (of a possible 6 - more on team Grace later). Both Slingers and newcomers Team J got a little overanxious and took 1 -1 in the Guess Who round, dropping them out of contention for the night; Grace (featuring the Quizmaster's daughter) were the only team to correctly answer the 10 point clue - the Waldorf education paid off there! All teams but one scored between 7 & 9 of a possible 10 in the Find The Connection round, at which point #momjeans were still comfortably ahead, leading 4-Way Stop by 7 and Butterbeer Beaches (back after a long absence) by 8. In the handout round (#6) the Beaches nosed past 4-Way into 2nd place, outscoring them 7 to 5 (#momjeans were again high scorers with 8). Trebek's Rejects were steady throughout but could not quite catch 4-Way Stop for 3rd place; they finished 2 points off the podium after no fewer than 5 teams (including the top 4) converted successful doubles in Round 7. Newcomers The Baconators were in the middle of the pack all night but a failed double bid in Round 7 left them in 8th place, while 1st-timers The Pants Are Square scored 10 out of 10 to claim 6th. A note about Grace, the team containing the Quizmaster's family: their 1 (of a possible 10) in Round 3 left them in last place, but 10 points in Round 4 bumped them up to 6th. A failed double try in Round 5 dropped them back to last until a successful double in Round 7 shot them into a dizzying but respectable 5th place. In the end, 4-Way Stop took 3rd place, a single point behind Butterbeer Beaches (in their triumphant return). Everyone took a back set to winners #momjeans, who (again) cruised home to win by 9 points. Just a great night all around.
We're doing it again the night after New Years Day, with the hair of the dog etc. See you then!
Turnout was down but the competition was hot tonight at Collision, with quite the surprise ending! 4-Way Stop and Wet Dream Catchers jumped out with the top score in Round 1 (5 of a possible 6), and #momjeans and first-timers Cammie Hates The Cello joined 4-Way with 6 of a possible 8 for the high score in Round 2; at this point only 4 points separated all 6 teams. #momjeans and Cammie Hates The Cello each scored 4 of a possible 6 in the Devil Wears Nada Round, leaving 5 teams bunched within 4 points (#momjeans and 4-Way Stop were tied atop the table). In the Guess Who round, both Trebek's Reject (a singular entity tonight) and Limoncello took a -1 while everyone else correctly answered for 2 points, beginning the gradual separation of the field. #momjeans and Wet Dream Catchers each scored 6 in Round 5, leaving #momjeans with 24 points, 4-Way Stop with 23, Dream Catchers with 22 and Cammie with 20. When #momjeans scored 6 to top Round 6, they entered the final round leading 4-Way and Dream Catchers by 3 and Cammie by 9 (hats off to Limoncello for scoring 5 in Round 6). 4-Way and Dream Catchers each scored 8 of a possible 10 in Round 7 while #momjeans scored 9; but Cammie Hates The Cello swooped past everyone with the night's only successful double-or-nothing to win by 2 points. Congratulations!!
As a side note, 4-Way Stop and Wet Dream Catchers finished in a tie for 3rd place. Since there is a tangible prize for 3rd ($10 gift card from Collision), and since King Trivia provides a tiebreaker question.....we had a tiebreaker round for 3rd place. To the question of Magic Johnson's career assist number, Wet Dream Catchers answered 1809 while 4-Way Stop guessed 2500; neither was close (as the actual number is over 10,000) but 4-Way Stop took the bonus point to finish 3rd. Thanks all, see you next week!
