It was a treat to be "back in the saddle" at Collision again tonight, and in front of a full house to boot. First-timers Cool Catz enjoyed themselves so much that they registered on the spot, so all 7 teams were even in terms of bonus points from the outset. Trivia Trumps Debate were high scorers in Round 1 with 6 out of 6, but Cautiously Optimistic leaped out in front in the Picture Round with a successful double-or-nothing for 16 points; 4-Way Stop, usually very competitive, went for the double and "only" got 9 out of 10, putting themselves behind the 8-ball for the rest of the night. #momjeans closed to within 6 points of the lead by doubling successfully in the Theme Round, but Cautiously Optimistic hit back by correctly answering the 8-point clue in the Guess Who round. The newly-renamed Jeffrey Dahmer's House Of Ribs finished strong, scoring 33 of a possible 40 over the final 4 rounds (including 9 out of 10 in the Find The Connection Round 5) to stay in the lead pack as they, Cautiously Optimistic and #momjeans separated themselves from the rest of the field to vie for the prizes.
After Round 5 we introduced the Survey Slam "extra" round, which was billed as a drinking round....but the team of non-drinkers (#momjeans) won! Eric, the manager at Collision, took care of them by comping their beverages but oh, the irony...The Survey Slam round yielded the funniest answer of the night, when Cautiously Optimistic asked if "Newark" was an acceptable answer to "worst place for a marriage proposal! I also want to give credit where it's due to Limoncello; though they only scored 1 point in the survey round, they were the ONLY TEAM to state they would NOT push the button to gain $10,000 if it meant a randomly selected person would lose $10,000 (the more popular answer in the survey). (And BTW the Quizmaster pointed out that the "correct" answer to "best basketball player ever" was not among the top 3 choices; somehow Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was absent)
Meanwhile, back at the game, #momjeans scored a 10 out of 10 in the Handout Round to stay within hailing distance of leaders Cautiously Optimistic; the Optimists left the door open in Round 7 by only scoring 4 out of 10 but #momjeans, missing their "Sporty Spice" expert, could only manage 3 to finish 5 points back in 2nd. House Of Ribs put an 8 on the board in the final round but fell 1 point short of the Moms, finishing 3rd. A tip of the hat to Limoncello; they continually apologized for their perceived lack of knowledge but finished a solid and respectable 4th.
The Survey/"drinking" round was a success, and management and I agreed to make a 6-pak the prize going forward, so players can budget their alcohol consumption each night and still walk away with a bonus. Thanks everyone, see you next week!
Thanks to quizmaster Don who runs King Trivia at the Pour Craft Beer Tap House on Tuesdays https://dev2.kingtrivia.com/venues/pour-tap-house/ for announcing our game while I tallied the scores.
The trivia room at Collision was packed with teams including Three Dudes and a Chick who joined in round 4. #momjeans took an early lead after a successful double on round 3, but newcomers Trivia Trumps Debates and Rogue Squad, along with stalwarts Trebek's Rejects all doubled up on round 4 "trees". Don challenged all three of those teams to quiz the quizmaster and all three were successful in stumping both of us up front. Rejected Llamas kept plugging along but whiffed on the first name in round 5, and the newbies crept higher. In the final round #momjeans swung for the fences and came up just short (Curse the Black Canyon of the Gunnison!) while Lemoncello was perfect(but did not risk the double). The masters were the Debaters with $30 and a sixpack, Rogue was Two for $20, and Trebek-third for $10.
Fun times at Collision this week....we had a tie for 1st, only the 3rd time in my 2+ years that's happened!!
Trebek's Rejects successfully doubled in the Picture Round to jump to a 7-point lead over #momjeans after 2 rounds. 4-Way Stop were consistent throughout and were high scorers in Round 3 (5 of a possible 6), while Cautiously Optimistic were the definition of steady, scoring 4 or 5 in 6 of the 7 rounds. #momjeans were the only team to correctly answer the 6-point clue in the Guess What round (everyone else got it for 4) and had closed to within 4 points of the lead.
When #momjeans tried for the double in the Find The Connection round but only got 9 right (resulting in a zero), Trebek's Rejects looked to be home free, leading the pack by 9 points. In round 6, Rejected Llamas (languishing in last place all night) hit a successful double to close to within a single point of the leaders; their score of 4 left them in 3rd place, their first time on the figurative winner's stand. Congrats to Rejected Llamas!
Trailing by 14 points entering the final round, #momjeans then converted a double of their own; the resulting 20 points left them and Trebek's Rejects tied atop the standings with 49 points! The Moms guessed 169 minutes for the tiebreaker question (total length of the "super duper cut" of Deadpool 2), while Trebek's Rejects' guess of 142 was within 8 of the correct answer 134; Trebek's Rejects were the winners by that single point. Well played, all! Incidentally, a tip of the hat to those who built this week's question set; the teams were genuinely challenged at every step. Well done!
To the players, great game this week, let's do it again Thursday!
